The legal aspect of international security Collaboration is key to meeting these challenges

I recently had an opportunity to teach a post graduate course at the Caribbean Maritime University in Kingston Jamaica entitled: The Legal Aspect of International Security.

The students were from the security forces and border protection agencies. Needless to say the classroom was filled with seriousness tempered with energy, learning,  a true spirit of collaboration and a degree of levity that I did not expect but found very refreshing.

Solutions to international security challenges

This article is about the results from their final assignment:

In your groups you are tasked with developing a story map using the StoryMapJS technology to document five (5) solutions to international security challenges that are in practice around the world

Storytelling and Digital literacy

I recently wrote about the importance of  storytelling and digital literacy both of which I think are critical skills in the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Digital intelligence is the future of work

Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution. - Albert Einstein The ability to not only collect but to analyze, visualize and weave information together into a compelling story is a powerful skill in today's information age.

What is digital storytelling? Digital storytelling is a combination of digital literacy and digital communication. Digital literacy being the ability to find, evaluate, utilize, share and create content as well as competency in computational thinking, while digital communication is the ability to communicate and collaborate with others using digital technologies and media. Further, digital storytelling is a demonstration of the emerging field of digital intelligence (DQ) which is defined by the DQ Institute as “the set of social, emotional and cognitive abilities that enable individuals to face the challenges and adapt to the demands of digital life.

DQ is a combination of eight interconnected areas (Digital identity, Digital use, Digital safety, Digital security, Digital emotional intelligence, Digital communication, Digital literacy and Digital rights) which are essential to skills development for the workforce of the future.

There are a variety of digital storytelling technologies out there, however, they are all designed to make it easy for you to harness the power of the digital medium to tell your story. Digital storytelling is therefore a simple yet powerful way to inform, engage, and inspire people in the electronic and information age we live in. Digital storytelling can be made for a wide variety of subjects and is multidisciplinary.

In this case the students were tasked with using StoryMapJS technology from Knight lab. StoryMapJS is

a free tool to help you tell stories on the web that highlight the locations of a series of events. It is a new tool, yet stable in our development environment, and it has a friendly authoring tool….StoryMap JS can pull in media from a variety of sources. Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, Vine, Dailymotion, Google Maps, Wikipedia, SoundCloud, Document Cloud and more!

I hope you enjoy these story maps as much as I did.

Identity Theft

This Storymap begins: Every 2 seconds there is another identity theft victim worldwide. It has become an epidemic that needs to be cauterized.

It explores solutions implemented in Jamaica, UK, USA, France and Trinidad using what this team calls a 5P strategy (Prevention, Preparation, Protection and Prosecution).
