If you were asked to Explain Jamaica’s logistics centred economy? What would your answer be?

I will admit, it is not an easy question to answer. 

However, here is my attempt.

What is a logistics centred economy?

How about you, what would your answer be?

More importantly why should you care?

In a word: opportunity.

Being able to explain what Jamaica’s logistics centred economy is about is not simply an academic exercise. The answer will reveal many an opportunity for individuals (job seeks or entrepreneurs) and businesses, small and large alike.

Jamaica’s Special Economic Zones: A Logistics Centered Approach to Economic Agility and Global Competitiveness –  Kamesa Williams

Jamaica has embarked on a game changing mission to becoming a Logistics Centered Economy; and has been strategically positioned to become the 4th node in the global logistics value chain by virtue of its geo-strategic location, competitive advantage factors; and its openness to international trade.

A logistics centered economy is one in which Government, businesses and institutions recognize the importance and tremendous benefits logistics offer and use it to manage the materials, financial resources, and data, needed in the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services inside of a country.

Jamaica has demonstrated the ability to quickly adapt to changes; and adequately and efficiently compete in the global value chain market. So with you in mind, bold and unprecedented goals have been achieved in crafting and implementing policies and legislation to facilitate ease of doing business. International bilateral trade agreements have been secured with multinational corporations, transportation systems and IT Communication infrastructure have been improved, and targeted education and skills training have been instituted thus creating a fertile environment for Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to develop.

Logistics and the supply chain, as time goes by, are bringing places, goods and services in closer proximity. Majority of the world’s goods and services are only a click away and travel across the globe has also become easier, notwithstanding border controls, and less hassling. All due to the increase in the use of technology in an effort satisfy the consumer. Currently Jamaica is embarking on becoming a Global Logistics Hub, the fourth node in the global trade, a logistics centred economy.

 Agriculture: An Important Sector in Jamaica’s Logistics Centred Economy – Michelle Williams

Agriculture plays a key role in a logistics centred economylike all other sectors agriculture involves the flow of raw material,finished goods and information (technical advise) for the success of the sector. Agriculture like other sectors combine the country’s natural resources, infrastructure and transportation network to grow and distribute crops.

 Logistics Hub to Enhance Trade Creation & Expansion – Sangita D. Telkar

A Logistics Center in the Hub of a specific area where all the activities relating to transport , logistics and goods distribution both for National and International transit are carried out , on a commercial basis by various operations.The successful implementation of the Government’s proposed Global Logistics Hub initiative is expected to provide a more modern , efficient and dynamic framework for enhanced trade creation and expansion . The Logistics activities in larger infrastructure is more convenient & efficient than several smaller inter-modal terminal .

Logistics is the overall organization of how resources are attained, stored and transported to their last destination. A logistic centered economy is an economy where a country can build and maintain its global competitive advantages through the facilitation and unlocking of global and domestic investments from the private sector. This type of economy not only focuses on large infrastructural projects, but also creates opportunities for investors to obtain world class services from the public and private sectors to get schemes moving rapidly while quality goods and services can be traded effortlessly.
