Internet grows by 79 Octillion

By Charles Wanguhu

While population grows and we continue to run out of spaces to live, it may be taken as positive news that the internet will always have space for a billion more .  The launch of a new Internet Protocol (IP) standard called IPv6 will overhaul the  Internet and increase the number of unique addresses to 340 undecillion (that’s 340 trillion trillion trillion). In figures that represents a  growth factor of 79 octillion (billion billion billion). This has been necessitated by the increase in devices and computers. While a traditional user may have originally only needed one unique address for their home computer the modern user with his smartphone (s), tablet, laptop may require a minimum of four.

The challenge going forward with the shift to IPv6 is the incompatibility of some systems including windows XP with it. Now If only we could do the same with housing and public service provision.
